International 12 Foot Dinghy 100th Anniversary Regatta

We attended the 100th Anniversary Regatta of the International 12 Foot Dinghy at West Kirby Sailing Club this weekend.  The club made an excellent job of hosting the event and the class racing was superb with sailors of all ages enjoying some superb racing in quite varied conditions.

Our part built 12 Foot dinghy commission was exhibited in the club house.

I was personally delighted to be able to crew for Anglia Yacht Brokerage in their 12 Foot.  Thank you Alex!

Timbers and fastenings complete

Approximately 1600 hand peined copper rivets together with steamed green oak timbers now in place in our International 12 Foot dinghy new build.

This class has a strong stiff but light weight hull ideally suited to racing.  May be this is one reason why it was the class of choice for the olympic games in the 1920s ?

International 12 Foot Dinghy – planking complete

The photo shows the mahogany sheerstrake being fitted to our latest new build – an International 12 foot dinghy.

The planking is mainly clean white spruce with mahogany garboards, broad strakes and sheerstakes.

Her owner wants a traditional wooden boat that is light enough to launch and land without difficulty, singlehanded.  We are confident that the choice of materials used in this hull will ensure her owners delight in this respect.

Cutting a stem rabbet – International 12 foot dinghy

All our boats are hand crafted in the English Lake District. by highly skilled craftsmen using the best materials available.

Our latest 12 Foot dinghy is no exception – the picture showing the stem rabbet being cut by hand.

International 12 Foot Dinghy – Lofting complete

We have recently been commissioned to build an International 12 Foot Dinghy destined for Chichester harbour.  She is to be built according to the Dutch racing rules and conforming closely to the 1913 specification for the class.  That is, clean white spruce planking with a mahogany garboard and sheerstrake.

She is to be built as light as possible to aid launching and landing.  We are confident that when complete she will be at the minimum weight allowed in the racing rules (104kg) and one of the lightest boats in the class fleet.

Classic Boat Show – Netherlands

We visited the classic boat show at Enkhuizen in the Netherlands on Saturday 6th November.  Our interest in the show was 2 fold:

Firstly, the Dutch International 12 foot dinghy class association were exhibiting.  Good Wood Boat has recently lofted and produced templates for our first 12 foot dinghy and the show was an excellent way to meet people interested in the class and discuss various characterisitcs of the boat.

Secondly, the show theme was ‘sustainability’ and since all our new hulls are built using timber from sustainable and ethical sources, it was a good opportunity to further investigate eco-certified timber suppliers.
