Joining with other members of the Wooden Boat Builders Trade Association, Good Wood Boat exhibited it’s National Redwing, at this years Southampton Boat Show.
Given the wealth of exhibits, from super yachts to ‘rigid inflatable boats’ it was pleasing when a number of visitors voiced their appreciation for the wooden boats and in particular, this beautiful handcrafted classic racing dinghy, stating, that for them, she was the best boat of the show!
Good Wood Boat Co were delighted to take part in the Lord Birkett Memorial Race Ullswater, a prestigious two-day long distance race in which boats sail the full length of the lake and back. The event was first raced in 1963 in honour of Lord Norman Birkett who died two days after making a successful speech in the House of Lords, which prevented Ullswater from becoming a reservoir. 2012 saw the 50th race, which attracted 219 entries. The photo shows Good Woods National Redwing being put through her paces prior to the event. On boths days, the winds were light and variable and from the North. 200+ boats on the start line across the width of the lake made a magnificent sight. We were pleased with a creditable 48th place and thoroughly enjoyed an excellent and well organised event. Thank you Ullswater Yacht Club.
We have recently started building a traditional clinker rowing boat for the Lake District based Keswick Launch Company. The exisiting fleet is ageing and we are working with them on their project of replacement. The Launch company wants a shape similar to an exisiting boat (which has reached the end of its useful life), but with some significant modifications. The starting point has been to ‘take the lines‘ from the exisitng hull (measure it), ‘loft it‘ (draw the lines full size) and then make the modifications on the loft floor.
We will provide news of her progress as the work progresses.
Bosham Sailing Club hosted a fabulous weekend of racing for classic day boats and dinghies of various different classes and from many differents parts of the UK. 48 boats entered, including the local fleet and 13 from other clubs, members of the ‘Classic and Vintage Dinghy Racing Association’ and Good Wood Boat’s National Redwing R249.
On Saturday the westerly wind, gusting up to 28 knots for much of the day, provided trying but exhilarating racing. On Sunday the conditions could not be more different with sun and light winds testing a different set of racing skills.
This exciting and evocative event was an excellent opportunity to race our Redwing and enjoy the camaraderie of like minded sailors. Thankyou Bosham Sailing Club for your hospitality and for putting on such an excellent event.

Good Wood Boat exhibted two clinker dinghies at the 2011 Beale Park boat Show. Wooden Tideway TW233 a restoration project nearing completion and a new build – National Redwing R249.
The Tideway was exhibited to illustrate the quality of varnish finish that can be achieved following non-caustic chemical stripping of the original coating. TW233 has also had her timbers replaced and a number of plank splits and rot spots repaired. These repairs were highlighted using labels, as were our custom made buoyancy blocks which we manufacture to suit the wooden Tideway and other classic dinghies.
Good Wood Boat Co are exhibiting two boats at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show, Alexandra Palace, London on 5th & 6rh March 2011. Tideway TW520 – sold last year, the first wooden Tideway to be built for seven years and National Redwing R249, winner of the 2010 dinghy show Concours D Elegance trophy.
R249 has been our demonstrator and show boat and is now offered for sale – £2000 less than her new price and with 12 months guarantee

Good Wood Boats National Redwing R249 has been exhibited at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall during August. The caption describing the exhibit was “A Cornish thoroughbred designed by a master”.
The exhibit formed the backdrop for the Redwing Class Nationals prize giving, as this year these were held at Falmouth (Restrongent Sailing Club) during Falmouth Classics week.
We intend to race R249 in next years Redwing Nationals at Looe.
We are delighted to announce Good Wood Boat won the Concours d’Elegance trophy at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show this weekend. The trophy was awarded to our National Redwing R249 for the best presented boat at the show. We were thrilled and delighted to win as it’s a real confirmation of our intent to build eye catching classic racing dinghies that not only race successfully, but also win the admiration of others both on and off the water.
